Last October, I had the pleasure of photographing little Chloe when she was just a week old and I was instantly smitten with her and her family. One year later and just a few days shy of Chloe’s first birthday, we met up at one of our mutual favorite spots – the Santa Monica Pier – to capture their beautiful family of three. It was one of those ideal days that make me fall more in love with family photography – the light was perfect and warm and Chloe was only in the mood for smiles and giggles. It doesn’t get any better!

Handsome Little H!

This little guy had his first photo shoot while he was still in his gorgeous mama’s belly! Now, just short of three years later, the afternoon was all about him. I can’t get enough of this little man – his gorgeous skin, his amazing hair and that smile…just mention one of his favorite subjects – cupcakes! – and he’ll have a blast sharing his thoughts on all of the different flavors :)

Family, Vision and Finding Inspiration

February 19th, 2013

A big part of creating the vision for a session is finding the best way to interpret the personality of the subject. Sometimes it’s as simple as doing something that I’ve never seen done. A big part of creating the vision for a session is finding the best way to interpret the personality of the subject. Sometimes it’s as simple as doing something that I’ve never seen done. Other times, it’s helping a client transform ideas that they’ve seen other places and making them their own. I’ve seen more pins to ‘Photography Inspiration’ boards lately than recipes and I understand why – Pinterest helps those who love gorgeous images to easily articulate their own vision. I have an interesting relationship with these boards but over the years, have learned to use these inspiring images for what they are – pretty spring boards to something more personal and unique.

I was recently hired by a woman to capture three generations of men – her husband, son and grandson. Although her home was filled with family photos, it occurred to her one day that she did not have any of her three most favorite men together. I loved the idea…my mother-in-law is a smart woman! It seemed simple enough but as I began to create our session in my mind, I realized that the one example of a ‘Generations’ image that I had seen was camped out in my mind and preventing me from thinking outside of the box. It was a beautiful, powerful image but it had been done. I wanted to do something different. I stressed and stressed for weeks because believe it or not, the closer I am to my client, the more anxious I am! Finally the day arrived and I decided to throw all of the planning out the window. The resulting images were simple, so them and also, so me. This image is one of my favorites from the day and one that client and photographer alike will treasure always :).

Santa Monica Family Session: The Corbett Family

The last time I met the Corbetts for family photos, it was October in Ventura. The thick fog that rolled in right before we were scheduled to shoot forced us to relocate to a nearby park on a hill where the higher elevation gave us a much-needed Plan B! Needless to say, it was such a fun session and I ended up loving how the shots turned out with a golden glow surrounded by beautiful haze.

For this year’s session, we wanted something different – a location that would contrast the park and still allow for some great images of the family and of the kids. We decided on downtown Santa Monica for the architectural elements and for the great light.  I think I found my new favorite local shooting spot :)

The Adams Family, Chapter 3

January 30th, 2013

This was my third time photographing the Adams family (see the other sessions here and here) and each year I see them, the love has multiplied. They are so warm and kind and if not for the giant camera, I would feel like I was spending the afternoon with friends I’ve known forever. This was my third time photographing the Adams family (see the other sessions here and here) and each year I see them, the love has multiplied. They are so warm and kind and if not for the giant camera, I would feel like I was spending the afternoon with friends I’ve known forever. It’s hard to put into words, but something about them just clicks. Simply put, it feels good to be around them and at the end of the day, even my camera is happier knowing it’s filled with images of them!

Here are some of my favorites. Feel free to get lost in baby gazes and sparkly eyes :)

The Hudsons: Summer Family Photos

July 26th, 2012

Many people (including myself) take tons of photos and never do anything with them. I spend hours making sure that mine are well organized but they still sit on external hard drives where no one can see them! I keep saying that it’s one of those projects that I will eventually get around to :). […]

Many people (including myself) take tons of photos and never do anything with them. I spend hours making sure that mine are well organized but they still sit on external hard drives where no one can see them! I keep saying that it’s one of those projects that I will eventually get around to :). With film, I couldn’t wait to get my rolls developed and to have the prints. One of the drawbacks of digital photos: while they hang out peacefully on discs and drives, they’re much more likely to be forgotten about.

I’ve known Jenny for a long time and one of things I love so much about her is that she’s so good about displaying photos. The first thing you see when you walk into their house is the wall covered in beautifully framed photos documenting many of the biggest moments in the Hudson family’s history. From pregnancies to birthday milestones, the memories are there to relive each time you take a look. It’s an incredibly special place and is the perfect foundation for a house full of love.

Jenny – thank you for inspiring me to finally start working on our family wall :)

The more I learn, the more I love about the Kumar family. I love that Summer is such a amazing writer; I am in awe of anyone who can write so brilliantly (and do so with two kids!). I love that they chose two of the most unique names for their kids that fit them each so perfectly. I love that each child has such an incredible personality, even at such a young age. I love that the kids interact so harmoniously. I even love what they chose to wear for their session!  They are a beautifully dynamic family and I had so much fun spending a warm, summer evening with them :).  You can check out Summer’s blog here and continue on for some of my favorites from our session in beautiful Pasadena!

As a photographer, I’m always on the hunt for new locations. I found this field while driving around one afternoon and thought that it would be PERFECT for a Fall family session! When it looked like Santa Monica wasn’t going to work out for the September Giveaway shoot, my first thought was to try out this spot. I was pretty excited when Brandi, the giveaway winner, said that she was up for anything!  Thank you for trusting me and for not being afraid to meet a stranger in an empty field :). It was a pleasure to spend 45 minutes with such a beautiful family!
